DJT Versus Presidents of Yester-Year

By Charles Pierce

DJT in jail

“In my life, I have watched John Kennedy talk on television about missiles in Cuba. I saw Lyndon Johnson look Richard Russell squarely in the eye and and say, “And we shall overcome.”
I saw Richard Nixon resign and Gerald Ford tell the Congress that our long national nightmare was over.
I saw Jimmy Carter talk about malaise and Ronald Reagan talk about a shining city on a hill. I saw George H.W. Bush deliver the eulogy for the Soviet bloc, and Bill Clinton comfort the survivors of Timothy McVeigh’s madness in Oklahoma City.
I saw George W. Bush struggle to make sense of it all on September 11, 2001, and I saw Barack Obama sing ‘Amazing Grace’ in the wounded sanctuary of Mother Emanuel Church in Charleston, South Carolina.
“These were the presidents of my lifetime. These were not perfect men. They were not perfect presidents, god knows. Not one of them was that. But they approached the job, and they took to the podium, with all the gravitas they could muster as appropriate to the job.
They tried, at least, to reach for something in the presidency that was beyond their grasp as ordinary human beings. They were not all ennobled by the attempt, but they tried nonetheless.
“And comes now this hopeless, vicious buffoon, and the audience of equally hopeless and vicious buffoons who laughed and cheered when he made sport of a woman whose lasting memory of the trauma she suffered is the laughter of the perpetrators.
Now he comes, a man swathed in scandal, with no interest beyond what he can put in his pocket and what he can put over on a universe of suckers, and he does something like this while occupying an office that we gave him, and while endowed with a public trust that he dishonors every day he wakes up in the White House.
DJT & Putin

DJT & Putin

“The scion of a multigenerational criminal enterprise, the parameters of which we are only now beginning to comprehend. A vessel for all the worst elements of the American condition. And a cheap, soulless bully besides.

We never have had such a cheap counterfeit of a president* as currently occupies the office. We never have had a president* so completely deserving of scorn and yet so small in the office that it almost seems a waste of time and energy to summon up the requisite contempt.
“Watch how a republic dies in the empty eyes of an empty man who feels nothing but his own imaginary greatness, and who cannot find in himself the decency simply to shut up even when it is in his best interest to do so. Presidents don’t have to be heroes to be good presidents.
They just have to realize that their humanity is our common humanity, and that their political commonwealth is our political commonwealth, too.
Watch him behind the seal of the President of the United States. Isn’t he a funny man? Isn’t what happened to that lady hilarious? Watch the assembled morons cheer. This is the only story now.”

Trump Implicated in Laundering Russian Mafia Money

On May 10, 2010, former employees at Donald Trump’s real estate development company blew the whistle on the entire operation. The company, they said, was owned and operated by the Russian mafia and bankrolled by Russian oligarchs – billionaires with influence in the Kremlin (the Russian government).
The employees alleged that the company’s primary service was international money laundering and tax evasion, not property development. To be clear, this company developed Trump properties, but this was NOT Donald Trump’s company.
In 2002, Donald Trump stopped building his own properties – if he ever had before. (Some of Trump’s earliest developments were actually the work of his father, Fred.)
For many years after, every new Trump property was the work of investment firm Bayrock Group, the alleged Russian money laundering operation. That year, Trump sold the use of his name to Bayrock in exchange for around 20% of the new “Trump” properties’ profits.
The deal couldn’t have come at a more opportune time. Trump was $4 billion in debt from the financial disasters surrounding his Atlantic City casinos, which had been charged with hundreds of violations of anti-money laundering laws. The banks had turned against him, but Bayrock came to his rescue. According to the company whistleblowers, that was the whole point.
They alleged that Bayrock was in operation *for* the deal with Trump.
Bayrock co-owners Felix Sater and Tevfik Arif would develop expensive properties under the Trump brand, lie to investors, buyers, and lenders to steal their money, and use the profits to form more companies to further conceal the flow of Russian money into the United States. If you don’t remember Sater from the attack on another with a broken wine glass that netted him 15 months in prison, check out his Wikipedia.org entry. He’s a real prize and close to Trump for years.
So, how likely is it that these allegations were true? VERY.
Felix Sater was born in Russia in 1966 but moved to Israel with his family in 1973, where they acquired dual citizenship and visas before quickly relocating to New York – a common practice for the era’s Russian mob.
Sater’s father was an underboss in the Semion Mogilevich criminal enterprise, which spread through many countries in western Asia and Europe but held the most influence in Russia, Hungary, and likely Israel.
Mogilevich’s transnational crime syndicate was once considered the top threat to U.S. national security – until former FBI heads and political families went to work for him.
In the late ‘90s, Sater was charged with running a fraudulent stock brokerage for the purpose of MONEY LAUNDERING and defrauding investors. He evaded charges by fleeing to Russia and only returned after agreeing to work as a secret informant for the FBI.
In 2006, Sater took Ivanka and Don Jr. on a trip to Moscow, where they received a special tour of the Kremlin. Ivanka even sat in Vladimir Putin’s chair.

BEE GONE cover with DJT as bumblebee

In 2020, the U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee reported that Sater was working with a large network of contacts in Russian military, intelligence, and government positions in the years that he would see Trump on an almost-daily basis.
Knowing all that we know, it’s hard to believe that Donald Trump will ever be stopped by the justice system or any government institution.
When Trump ran for president in 2015, the FBI had known for 13 years that Trump was working with Russian organized crime, funded by Russian elites. After all, his closest connection to Putin was THEIR informant.
But they knew about his Russia ties even before this.
They knew about the Russian mafia members they caught doing business in Trump Tower in the 90s.
They knew about Trump’s Fourth of July trip to Moscow in the 80s. (Reports have surfaced for years that Russia has been grooming DJT since at least 1987l
They knew about most if not all of Trump’s other transnational crime connections documented on Trump File.
They knew about this, and they didn’t stop him. They didn’t warn us. They didn’t open THEIR file on Donald Trump in 2016 and send it to the Justice Dept. to hold him accountable or protect us.
In fact, they helped him. But that’s another set of stories.
There’s a public file on Trump now. It’s our website – countless hours of research organized by when these events took place. You can help us keep it going by donating at TrumpFile.org/donate

Trump 2.0 and Surviving It

Donald J. Trump as a loser

Donald J. Trump as a loser

“Trump’s impatience makes him not only an unreliable negotiator; it makes him a weak one.”

When he spoke with U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer earlier this month, Trump was desperate to notch a win, having already claimed without any evidence to have struck 200 trade deals (more than the number of countries the U.S. recognizes in the world). Those 2 lines courtesy of David A. Graham in “The Atlantic.”)

Other countries have now branded DJT as TACO, which means “Trump Always Chickens Out.”

How does that make you feel about the poorly-conceived, ham-handedly executed series of executive actions that pass for United States policy these days?

It’s hard to believe that we are all going to have to endure over 3 more years (3 years and 7 months) of the convicted felon now crapping up the Oval Office with tacky gold stuff, but there you have it, folks. The GOP in office can’t be counted on to do anything constructive. Destruction they have down. That’s why we’re in a world of hurt right about now.

Trump behind bars

Trump behind bars

See “American Dharma,” Errol Morris’s interview with Steve Bannon to learn how the GOP and Steve Miller and Project 2025 were being prepared for decades to ruin our once-great country. And now, thanks to some bad decisions on the part of the Democratic party and some worse decisions on the part of U.S. voters, we’re stuck with this guy (who claims he is going to run again in 2028).

I seem to be the only one that I personally know who really feels strongly about global warming and wants a government that will do everything in its power to keep our volatile weather from killing us. I have nothing against gas-guzzling autos, per se, but I have a lot against a tornado leveling my house (and me). And don’t look for help from FEMA now that DJT is in the process of ruining every government agency.

All I’ve heard from DJT are catch-words and buzz-phrases like “Drill, baby, drill!” Those are the catch words and buzz phrases that got us into this mess in the first place.

2024 Prius

Steely Dan, the new Prius.

I’ve read that there are creative suggestions to help prevent the melting of the glaciers. I’ve done my part by driving a Prius since 2000 (7 at last count). However, the others (and, by this, I mean other countries and our own country), with the exception of that Swedish girl who keeps grabbing the spotlight to trumpet her concerns about global warming, seem to be doing nothing at all. What about distributing some white marbles on the glacial ice to reflect the sun’s rays and help prevent melting. No? (I read it actually could work, but there are concerns.)

Let me know how you’re coping with this worse-than-the-Pandemic period of time dealing with DJT.

Republicans and Their Dubious Relationship with Facts

Joe Biden in Independence, Iowa, on the Fourth of July, 2019.

Paul Krugman is a columnist for the New York Times, but he was reprinted in the Austin “American Statesman” today talking about why Republicans seem to have such a tenuous grip on facts. He has a point. I think some of the explanation behind Krugman’s thesis can be laid at the feet of the fractured nature of today’s news—where even the Facebook-like meeting grounds have splintered into those that are far right, those that are far left, and Facebook, itself. So, here is Paul Krugman’s “When Did Republicans Start Hating Facts?”

I reprint it here because not all of you can re-read it on the pages of the Austin “American Statesman” (p. A11) and, in my own experience, there is always a pay wall up on the NY Times.

“Republicans spent most of 2020 rejecting science in the face of a runaway pandemic; now they’re rejecting democracy in the face of a clear election loss.

What do these rejections have in common? In each case, one of America’s two major parties simply refused to accept facts it didn’t like.

I’m sure it’s not right to insist that Republicans ‘believe’ that, say, wearing face masks is useless or that there was widespread voter fraud. Framing the issue as one of belief suggests that some kind of evidence might change party loyalists’ minds.

In reality, what Republicans say they believe flows from what they want to do, whether it’s ignore a deadly disease or stay in power despite the voters’ verdict.

In other words, the point isn’t that the GOP believes untrue things. It is, rather, that the party has become very hostile to the idea that there’s an objective reality that might conflict with its political goals.

Democratic National Convention, 2008, Denver: CNN Headquarters.

Notice, by the way, that I’m not including qualifiers, like saying “some” Republicans.  We’re talking about most of the party here. The Texas lawsuit calling on the Supreme Court to overturn the election was both absurd and deeply un-American, but 60% of Republicans in the House signed a brief supporting it, and only a handful of elected Republicans denounced the suit.

At this point, you aren’t considered a proper Republican unless you hate facts.

But when and how did the GOP get that way?  If you think it started with Donald Trump and will end when he leaves the scene (if he ever does), you’re naive.

Republicans have been heading in this direction for decades. I’m not sure whether we can pinpoint the moment when the party began its descent into malignant madness, but the trajectory that led to this madness probably became irreversible under Ronald Reagan.

Republicans have, of course, turned Ronald Reagan into an icon, portraying him as the Savior of a desperate, declining nation.  Mostly, however that is just propaganda.  You’d never know from the legend that economic growth under Reagan was only slightly more robust than it had been under Jimmy Carter, and slower than it would be under Bill Clinton.

And rapidly rising income inequality meant that a disproportionate share of the benefits from economic growth went to a small elite, with only a bit trickling down to most of the population.  Poverty, measured properly, was higher in 1989 than it had been a decade earlier.

Other measures suggest that we were already veering off course.

For example, in 1980, life expectancy in America was similar to other wealthy nations; but the Reagan years represent the beginning of the Great Mortality Divergence of the United States from the rest of the advanced world.  Today, Americans, on average, can expect to live almost 4 fewer years than their counterparts in comparable countries.

The main point, however, is that under Reagan, irrationality and hatred for the facts began to take over the GOP.

There has always been a conspiracy-theorizing, science-hating, anti-democratic faction to America.  Before Reagan, however, mainstream conservatives and the Republican establishment refused to make alliance with that faction, keeping it on the political fringe.

Reagan, by contrast, brought the crazies inside the tent.

Many Americans are, I think, unaware that Reagan embraced a crank economic doctrine—belief in the magical power of tax cuts. I’m not sure how many Americans remember that the Reagan administration was also remarkably hostile to science.

Reagan’s ability to act on his hostility was limited by Democratic control of the House and the fact that the Senate still contained a number of genuinely moderate Republicans.  Still, Reagan and his officials spent years denying the effect of acid rain, while insisting that evolution was “just a theory” and promoting the teaching of Creationism in schools.

This rejection of science partly reflected deference to special interests that didn’t want science-based regulation.  Even more important, however, was the influence of the religious right, which

Good Old Boy Fred Thompson, running as a Republican, in 2008.

first became a major political force under Reagan, has become ever more central to the Republican coalition and is now a major denier of the party’s rejection of facts—and democracy.

For rejecting facts come naturally to people who insist that they’re acting on behalf of God. So does refusing to accept election results that don’t go their way.

Sure enough, a few days ago, televangelist Pat Robertson—who first became politically influential under Reagan—pronounced the Texas lawsuit “a miracle,” an intervention by God that would keep Trump in office.

The point is that the GOP rejection of facts that has been so conspicuous this year wasn’t an aberration.  What we’re seeing is the culmination of a degradation that began a long time and and is almost surely irreversible.
